Pushkar is also home to the famed annual Pushkar Camel fair. Thousands of traders with at least ten times as many camels and live stock fill the plains surrounding the town for 5-days of trade and fair. This festive desert fair held annually is quite a sight to behold and ends on the full moon day in the month of Karthik, in the Hindu calendar (around Oct - Nov). This year the fair is from October 31st to November 9th.
Traders, herders and camels travel from far and wide to get here. Some travel for up to 3-weeks before reaching Pushkar. Most of the trading will take place in the first few days.
Tents, fire, song, dance fill the desert air turning the desolate plains into an enchanting wonderland of centuries gone by. Bright turbans dot the landscape like colorful sprinkles and camels are dressed for a royal parade.
For photographers, this is a heaven on earth with endless magic moment images awaiting in every possible direction. Most of the locals love to be photographed though it is always polite to ask permission first before doing so. If you enjoy photography you'll enjoy the Pushkar Camel fair and just being in Rajasthan in general.
