Taj Mahal

Our overnight stop in Agra is purely to see the Taj Mahal. I've visited India many times and each time I had no interest to see the Taj Mahal, always thinking it was a tourist trap and a monument that was overly hyped up.

A few years and many trips to India later, one day, while traveling through the north I overnighted in Agra and the following morning decided to go and see the Taj Mahal at sunrise. Begrudgingly, I paid the high entrance fee and went in along with a few other sunrise enthusiasts all equipped with their digital cameras.

What I witnessed was beyond words and now realize what all the talk about the Taj Mahal is about. Having visited it a few times now I feel sunrise is the best time to see the Taj. So, we've planned for us to be there just as the sun rises and casts its first rays on this munificent symbol of love.

Built by Emperor Shah Jahan as a memorial for his second wife, the Taj took some 20,000 workers from India and Central Asia to construct with added assistance from specialist from as far as Europe to help produce exquisite semiprecious stone inlay work.

The sprawling city also hosts a magnificent fort and a sprinkling of fascinating tombs and mausoleums.
